Hi there,
Quickie question. Having ordered the case+psu+fan bundle I'm now about to buy new disk(s), is it fine to put 1 and maybe 2 x 160G raptors @ 10,000rpm into your case? Is there enough heat dissipation and any idea of what the resulting noise factor might be over more normal 7600rpm versions.
Thanks,
Mike.
P.S. Looks like I posted this in the wrong place - oops!! |

Hi Mike,
I think I'm supposed to be able to move it for you, but just now I can't see how.
I'm sure the Raptores would be fine - but frankly I don't recommend them.
The fact uis that they are faster, more noisy, smaller, and more expensive.
A normal DAW using a 7200rpm SATA HD can suatain around 100 tracks of simultaneous playback... and even at 96Khz and 24 bit that's going to be 50 or 60 tracks.
Unless you go over that, or have some special reason why you need the extra speed of the Raptor, i simply see no point....

Hi, thanks for your info.
Yep, take your point, and I must say I've never been disk bound for audio on my current system. However, there's a few potential reasons for upping the speed - potential that is...
First, I sometimes edit video, e.g. live gigs with 4 cameras, the usual crossfades and '24' style multi-views. Or I'll be doing a rockumentary with lots of short clips from say 5 hours video footage.
Second I'm going to be investing in someone's orchestral library soon so I'll then be streaming full orchestral samples from disk.
Third, the current album which I'm just about finishing is probably going to get somewhere near 50 tracks. And with lots of edits and crossfades between multiple takes that's quite a lot of disk access to different files.
Really I'm just trying to head off any extra agravation I might get on the next album and with more videos... Still, what I'm going to do is reuse a couple of old disks that I have in my current system and then see how it goes.
Thanks again for the info. I'll let everyone here know what the outcome is for future reference!
Mike. |
