Why PaQ?
PaQ stands for “Powerful and Quiet”. People want fast computers, but over the last few years “fast” has increasingly meant “powerful” in the literal sense of high power output; and that leads directly to high heat and high noise.

This noise is often completely unacceptable. For instance, any extraneous noise can be disastrous to musicians who use their computers to record and compose music. It is also an unwelcome accompaniment to a CAD or Graphics workstation, particularly in a busy open-plan office, with serious effects on productivity; and is equally intrusive in a Home Theatre PC.

It seems that computers were getting louder and louder just as the rest of the world was coming to the realization that noise is a major pollutant of our environment – something to be eliminated wherever possible.

The impetus to design and build the PaQ case came from the experience of trying to improve existing cases. It proved impossible to achieve efficient (i.e. low noise) cooling – the layouts were so far from optimal that a complete re-think was clearly called for.

And so PaQ was born.
